Many years ago when I went to the shops as a beginner, it just naturally occurred to me to pick up a zoom lens because of the type of photography I do to reach the farthest subjects. I never gave a second thought about inquiring many options other than range of affordable prices and how it impacts my style.
I have been shooting the nature & wildlife for many years now and zoom lens has been playing a vital role to get to the closer range from a standing point and also for a fact that I can compose or re-compose anyway I want to.
But then a few years later, things seem to have changed when I began to think if people's advise of using a prime lens would have made an impact on my indoor photography to get those desired results.
It was probably too early to decide as well because nothing beats your experience and how you feel about what to have in your camera kit for a desired outcome. The story of field experience when I couldn't compose or get closer to the subjects made me realize the cost of giving up zoom lens choice.
Like I said, on a fine day, when I was doing a outdoor photo-shoot, I realized that the zooming disability is limiting me from the creativity of compositions by walking around to either get closer to the subjects or trying to include interesting elements in the frame. Too much of physical movements made me lose the mood of photo shoot and the clients to lose confidence on me.
As a candid freelancer I am fully aware that people photography at the events can be very unpredictable as many things happen at a point in time and the ability of zoom lens can help me to quickly turn around and capture the moments instead of running towards them. It is more or less the same for subjects in wildlife as well.
Maybe it is intentional why manufacturers produce prime lens as a distinct product but I am sure I am confident to seek the desired results by applying enough light and exposure elements accordingly. But who knows how time changes everything!
As on today, I own a F2.8g 17-50mm lens for shorter range and a F2.8g 50-150mm lens for farther range.
